Demineralization is the method to remove the mineral salts from water by the process of ion-exchange. Impurities that stays dissolved in the water dissociate to form negative and positive charged particles recognized as ions. These compounds or impurities are called electrolytes.
Normally, all natural water has electrolytes in different concentration. An ion-exchange container holds ion-exchange resin of the requisite form through which water is allowed to bypass. The discerning ions in the water are replaced with radicals / ions, loosely held by the resin. In this manner, the water is passed throughout several vessels or a mixed bed vessel so as to separate the positive as well as negative ions, and water is demineralised.
